Five For Friday with a Confession!

Here is my five for Friday!

1. I have been back at creating teaching stuff!  Back in August I made raffle tickets to use as part of my reward system.  I decided to post them to my TPT store as a FREEBIE.  Grab them here!

2. I created a new sight word game to use with my kindergarten groups!  I know they will love it!  It is available at my TPT store!  Click here!

3. Read Across America is coming up!  My school is having students participate in activities each day.  I was asked to created a poster to hang up in the hallways!  This is what I came up with!  What will your school be doing?

4. I have started a new hobby!  My sister-in-law gave me a beading set for Christmas and I. AM. ADDICTED!  This week I had some time to make yet another jewelry set! 

5. Confession Time!  I have been watching my diet for about seven months now (with the exception of a couple of weeks at Christmas.  I picked up a bag of M&M's last weekend...and they are gone.  I went to the store today for another bag...and ended up with two bags since they only cost $1.20 each for 12.6 oz bag!!

Uh-Oh! Cavity!

My Dental Health Unit that I created last year was a blast to use with my kindergarten class.  Since I have changed school districts this year, the sight word game I had created doesn't match the sight words that the kindergarten students learn.  I finally had some time to create the Uh-Oh!  Cavity! game using sight words from the Scott Foresman curriculum.  I played the game with my kindergarten groups today and they LOVED it!  A few of them told me that they have played the game at home...which obviously they haven't since I hadn't even posted it to TPT yet!  I sure hope they do play it at home--they could use the extra practice!  To get the Scott Foresman version of the game click here.

It's Friday...Linky!

I am so glad today is Friday!  This has been a BUSY week and the next few weeks are going to be just as busy!  Today I am linking up with Doodle Bugs for Five for Friday!

 

Here is what has been happening in my world this week! 

Our seeds that we planted have sprouted!  It is truly a miracle!  This is half of my classes pots and the students are so excited to see the growth each day.  We are keeping a short journal of the growth.

 

I completed my Fun With Frog Pack this week!  I love making my own center activities and finally had some time to work on another pack.  The pack was so much fun to make and the students loved the activities. .  The students completed this activity of ordering the sentence and then recording it. 

We also played a fun math game.  For this game students rolled the fly cube and counted how many flys there were.  Then they rolled the frog cube to see how many flies the frog ate.  We then subtracted to find the answer.  Students recorded the subtraction sentences on a recording sheet.

If you don't have the cubes, I would HIGHLY recommend them.  They are so easy to switch out and make it so you can play so many fun games!  I use them for sight word games, addition, subtraction, and alphabet games!  I also love that they are soft so rolling them makes no noise on a table!  Click on the picture below to purchase from Carson Dellosa.

Today my kindergarten class did not have school.  Next years kindergarteners had the opportunity to come see the school and do some fun activities.  We take them on a bus ride around the neighborhood, read a Gingerbread Man story, have them color and cut out a gingerbread man(YIKES!  Those scissor skills were a bit scary!) and of course have gingerbread cookies and milk! 

I have also been working on printing out pages for memory books.  During the school year we take pictures of the students doing class activities and events (sitting with Santa, meeting a firefighter, dressed as pilgrims, etc.).  We then put the pages together for the students to have as a keepsake from kindergarten.  They are SOOOOOOOO much work!  I always put it off until the last minute to get them all put together.  This is my project for the weekend!  UGH!  I really wish I had a magic wand and they would magically be done!

Frog Freebies!

My class is learning about life cycles!  We started with the life cycle of a plant and are watching our little sprouts grow!  Hopefully they will stay alive and the kiddos can take them home for their moms for Mother's Day next week!  We are now learning about frogs!  Here are two freebies for you that I am using in my class this week!

The first activity is a Fr and Fl Blends Sort Worksheet.  Students will sort the eight pictures by the beginning blend sound.

I actually have some foam lily pads for the students to lay out like a number line on the floor.  That way they can physically act out the addition equations to find the sum!  It's May and their energy level is HIGH!  I've got to get that energy out!

Almost May???

Where has the past month gone?  I can't believe that it is almost May and the end of the school year is fast approaching.  I haven't posted for quite a while because life has become CRAZY!  First we decided to sign our son up for soccer.  We were always hesitant about getting sports started because of the scheduling of practices and games.  I think I am officially a soccer mom, but I couldn't be more proud of my son!  I have also accepted a new teaching position for next year.  Making this decision required taking time to update my resume', fill out the application, attending an interview and TONS of praying!  I was offered the position as a reading specialist in the same school that my son attends!  I am so excited to be closer to him to see the new challenges and rewards this postion will bring!   I am REALLY going to miss teaching kindergarten!  I will always have a heart for those kinder kids so I plan to continue creating things for my fellow kinder teaching friends but I also hope to expand the things I create to other grade levels as well!

Now that I have all of that out in the open...here is what my kinders have been working on!  I always get super excited about teaching the concept of whole and half.  Years ago I found this cute idea in a Mailbox magazine and the kids always love it!  I call it the magic pizza!

To make it, each student will need two plates.  Students will decorate one plate with a crust and all their favorite toppings!  Then I cut a slit half way into the two plates!

Join the two plates together!

The plates can be rotated to show whole, half or any other fraction!  The kids really think it is magic!

 I decided to create some other activities to work on the concept half and whole and also teaching students to share groups equally.  I had students work on the promethean board to divide pictures into two equal groups.  The next day, students were given two plates and a page of food graphics.

 Students were told to divide the lunch with someone...most students chose their mom!!  Here are some examples of students working on the activity!

Getting the carrot sticks glued on!  Students had to make sure each plate had half of the carrot sticks!

You can get this activity in my Whole/Half and Dividing Groups Set.  The set also includes 3 other activities for practice.

Sharing the coins!  Students will trace their hand and a friend's hand and then cut and glue the coins so each hand has half!

Green! Green! Green!

I have been seeing so much green this week!  I wish it was green money...but instead it is St. Patrick's Day fun!  We have been doing activities from my St. Patrick's Day unit and it has been a blast!  You can find the unit by clicking here!  You can also view my previous post that shows some of what is included in the unit.

Here are some pictures of other things we have been doing.  We made a bulletin board telling why we are lucky!  My students came up with such cute reasons!

My mommy got a new dog.

I have a older brother.

We also painted rainbows!  Students then had to find a picture in a magazine of something silly that their leprechaun found at the end of the rainbow.  They placed a leprechaun picture on one side of the rainbow and their magazine picture on the other side.  Students wrote about what their leprechaun found.  They shared their writing with the class and of course everyone thought it was hilarious!

The leprechaun found a lotion at the end of the rainbow.

Also, if you haven't seen the Leprechaun Song on Youtube by Harry Kindergarten, check it out!  We have been using it this week to review counting!  It has such a catchy tune and I love the way it displays the numbers and the quantity too!

St. Patrick's Day Is Coming!

St. Patrick's Day was never that big of a deal to me until 2009!  March 17th, 2009 I gave birth to my 10  lb 6 oz baby boy!    Now each year I look forward to this special day!  I have made a fun unit to help my kinders learn and try to maintain their fading attention span as spring break approaches...and I have even included a freebie!  Here are some of the activities included in the unit:

Rainbow Rhyming: Working on rhyming words!  This activity also includes a recording sheet that has students sounding out the CVC words!

Follow the Rainbow Addition: Works on basic addition with sums 0 to 5.  Students match the pot of gold to the rainbow.  This activity also includes a cut and paste worksheet.

Solid Gold Syllables: Students sort 1, 2 and 3 syllable words
